Abstract

George Roseborough Collins (1917-1993) was an American Field Service (AFS) ambulance driver during World War II and an art historian and professor at Columbia University. The George R. Collins Collection consists of World War II automotive instructional booklets and maintenance manuals, newspaper clippings on World War II history and the local AFS student exchange programs chapter, World War II artifacts and posters, and his post-war personal correspondence.

Alternate Extent Statement: (2 boxes, 1 tube)

Access Restrictions: This collection is open for research. Cotton gloves are required for the handling of all photographic material. Permission to view the fragile military posters and broadside needs to be obtained by the AFS Archives in advance.

Use Restrictions: Single photocopies may be made for research purposes. Permission to publish material from the collection must be submitted in writing to the AFS Archives. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.

Acquisition Method: This collection was given to the Archives of the American Field Service and AFS Intercultural Programs by Mrs. Christiane C. Collins in October 1993.

Appraisal Information: No items were deaccessioned, separated, or removed from the collection.

Preliminary finding aid written by Johnamarie Macias and Nicole Milano in February 2011 and encoded in EAD by Nicole Milano in February 2011 under the scope of the 2010-2011 Basic Processing grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.

The Correspondence, Posters, and Publications series consists of post-war personal correspondence about AFS fundraising efforts and notes between fellow drivers from C Platoon of 567 Coy. Notable correspondents include fellow World War II ambulance drivers George Rock, Edwin Masback, Ward Chamberlin, and Thomas Barbour. This series also includes World War II automotive instructional booklets and maintenance manuals for vehicles such as the Dodge WC 3/4 Ton 4x4 Truck, issued by the United States Army and used by AFS drivers and other military units in the war. This series also contains newspaper clippings on World War II history and the local AFS student exchange programs chapter in West Falmouth, Massachusetts with marginalia, military posters and a broadside from Fascist Italy, and photographs of the posters taken by a family member prior to donation.

This series is arranged alphabetically by folder title with the exception of the posters and broadside, which are rolled together in a storage tube.
