Abstract

David Stewart Hendrick III was an American Field Service (AFS) ambulance driver during World War II. The David S. Hendrick III Memorabilia Collectioncontains three German medals (an Iron Cross, War Merit medal, and Faithful Service medal) and a pin from the Third Reich, the national flag of the Third Reich (flown over a German tank), a commemorative brass coin from the German Afrika Korps, an unidentified pin, and a clothing or uniform item with "Burma" embroidered in red,all of which were collected during or directly after his service with AFS.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The David S. Hendrick III Memorabilia Collection contains three German medals (an Iron Cross, War Merit medal, and Faithful Service medal) and a pin from the Third Reich, the national flag of the Third Reich (flown over a German tank), a commemorative brass coin from the German Afrika Korps, an unidentified pin, and a clothing or uniform item with "Burma" embroidered in red.  The medals and coin were given to Hendrick by a German officer and three men from a tank crew he found stranded south in the desert in Tunisia, and the flag was given to him by the same officer after the war.

In the event that this research becomes a source for publication, a credit line indicating the Archives of the American Field Service and AFS Intercultural Programs is required. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.
