This photograph was taken when Arthur Howe, Jr. and others  raised the first American  Flag over the tents of the Americans in the forces of the Middle East. Brigradier Patrick Augustine Ardagh (1891-1944) was a New Zealand Officer. He was appointed Assistant Director of Medical Services (ADMS), 2 NZ Division in May 1942.
