Mark Vincent Brennan (b. ca. 1886) was an American Field Service (AFS) ambulance driver during World War I. The collection contains two photographic albums, a piece of silk with the Indian Head logo of Section Sanitaire [Etat-] Unis (SSU) 1, orders, citations, a poem, German propaganda distributed to American soldiers, and various other documents.
The Mark V. Brennan Collection contains two photographic albums, one with 1.75” x 2.75” unlabeled photographic prints, and one containing mostly 3.5” x 5.5” unlabeled photographic prints, as well as a few larger and smaller prints and a newspaper clipping. The albums document scenes Brennan witnessed in World War I during his tours with the American Field Service and the U.S. Army Ambulance Service. Images include battlefield and other landscapes, and candid and posed group and individual portraits of men in the service and civilians. The collection also includes two folders containing a piece of silk with the Indian Head logo of Section Sanitaire [Etats-] Unis1 (SSU 1), orders, citations, a poem, German propaganda distributed to American soldiers, and various other documents.
