Attorney Raymond McKim Mitchell (1911-2001) was an American Field Service (AFS) ambulance driver during World War II and co-founder of the Greater New Bedford Chapter of the AFS International Student Scholarship Program. The Raymond M. Mitchell Collection consists of clippings, correspondence, memoranda and other material associated with AFS Intercultural Programs, Inc., and memorabilia from his service as an ambulance driver during World War II.
The Raymond M. Mitchell Collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, newspaper clippings, brochures, pamphlets, and newsletters related to his service with AFS Intercultural Programs, Inc. as a member of the Board of Directors and as president of the New Bedford Chapter. Notable individuals represented in the correspondence include Director General Stephen Galatti, Chairman for the New England Chapter S. Prescott Fay, Secretary John Nettleton, and Executive Committee member William J. Hooton. The collection also contains newspaper clippings, photographs, and memorabilia related to his service as an AFS ambulance driver in World War II, including his two AFS uniforms and a visor cap, his 1946 Order of the British Empire medal, the 1939-1945 medal, a framed citation from 1946 commending Mitchell’s achievements from the British Embassy in Washington, D.C., and and a large framed document from September 4, 1946 acknowledging his position as an Honorary Officer of the Civil Division of the Order of the British Empire by George the Sixth. The collection also includes material that was collected posthumously, including the flyer for the presentation of the Order of the British Empire to AFS Intercultural Programs, Inc. in 2006.

Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.
Acquisition Method: The Raymond M. Mitchell Collection was donated to the Archives of the American Field Service and AFS Intercultural Programs by his son, Charles M. Mitchell, and other members of the Mitchell family in various stages between December 1999 and June 2006.
Appraisal Information: No items were deaccessioned, separated, or removed from the collection.
