Robert Metzler Applewhite (1921-1991) served as an ambulance driver for the American Field Service (AFS) in World War II and became the Corporate Secretary of AFS Intercultural Programs from 1962 to 1990. The Robert M. Applewhite Papers consists of memorabilia, correspondence, photographs, diaries, newspaper clippings, financial documents, and other papers that document his service with AFS as both a volunteer ambulance driver and student exchange program staff member.
The Robert M. Applewhite Collection consists of memorabilia, correspondence, photographs, diaries, newspaper clippings, financial documents, and other material that documents his service with AFS as both a volunteer ambulance driver and student exchange program staff member. The bulk of the collection contains records and other documents created during his thirty-two years spent as the Corporate Secretary of AFS, including memoranda and reports. There is also documentation related to his service abroad from 1942 to 1945 such as his certificate of service and immunization card. Some material was collected posthumously by members of the AFS staff, including photographs and negatives, obituaries announcing his death, and speeches from the memorial service held in his honor. The collection also contains memorabilia related to his volunteer service as an ambulance driver, including a French army shoulder insignia and a Czechoslovakian wooden hand grenade box from World War II.

Use Restrictions: Single photocopies may be made for research purposes. Permission to publish material from the collection must be submitted in writing to the AFS Archives. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.
Acquisition Method: The World War II papers and memorabilia and post-war correspondence (up to 1948) were donated to the Archives of the American Field Service and AFS Intercultural Programs (AFS Archives) by Robert M. Applewhite in 1989. The AFSIS/AFS Intercultural Program papers dated after 1948 were transferred to the AFS Archives by AFS Intercultural Programs, Inc. at an unknown date.
