Abstract

Architect Horace Mather Lippincott, Jr. was an American Field Service (AFS) ambulance driver during World War II. The Horace M. Lippincott, Jr. Collection consists of clippings, newsletters, non-AFS publications, and other material related to his service during World War II.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Horace M. Lippincott, Jr. Collection consists of clippings and newsletters related to his service as an ambulance driver with the American Field Service (AFS) during World War II. The collection also includes copies of letters from the British Joint Staff Mission and Franklin D. Roosevelt, both addressed to Stephen Galatti during World War II. Also present in the collection are AFS rosters and brochures, non-AFS publications, a “Kiwi” uniform (which was typically worn by New Zealand soldiers during World War II, but was also issued to Lippincott since he was six feet tall and unable to fit the standard British uniform worn by other drivers in AFS), and a two-page copy of an article written by Lippincott for a Haverford College collection of alumni experiences entitled “The Fractured 40s.”
