Title:
Abou Brahim and his Son
Date:
1942 November
Description:

Mayor, Abou Brahim, (smoking the arghielia or “hubble-bubble” pipe) with his son. This was a social affair. The mouthpiece was handed from man to man around in a circle. The tobacco was usually mixed with hashish and sometimes camel dung. Drawing it through the water made the smoke milder; but the water got pretty dark and smelly. Note the ever-present flies on the wall.

Location: The Menzoul, Kafate, Syria.
