Abstract

Donald Joseph Bragg was an American Field Service (AFS) ambulance driver during World War II. The Donald J. Bragg Collection contains maps, photographs, papers, and memorabilia related to his service with AFS during the war.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Donald J. Bragg Collection contains maps of North Africa and Burma (a few containing Chinese and Japanese characters), a colored World War II poster entitled, “A careless word…another cross,” newspaper clippings, a few original photographs, and papers (including an official acceptance letter as an American Field Service ambulance driver and assignment instructions during service.) The collection also contains memorabilia, including his AFS identification bracelets, a metal luggage tag, and a Japanese good luck banner with handwritten Chinese characters (which was carried as a token of good luck during the war, and was likely given to a Japanese soldier by a member of a Chinese or Taiwanese police unit or office.)
