Abstract

Eugene Ralph Hammond (1921-2002) was an American Field Service (AFS) ambulance driver during World War II. The Eugene R. Hammond Collection consists of a journal documenting his service with AFS from June 1942 to August 1945, photographs, newspapers, postcards, U.S. military issue maps, memorabilia, ephemera and other material collected by Hammond during the war.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Eugene R. Hammond Collection consists of a journal documenting his service from June 1942 to August 1945, photographs, newspapers, unmarked postcards from Italy, Germany and the Middle East, United States military issue information guides for soldiers, maps of Africa and Italy, Italian language guides, Italian art catalogues (including one from the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence printed in 1932), a guide to the organization of the Germany army, and other material and ephemera collected by Hammond during World War II. The memorabilia includes assorted Italian, German, and Allied badges and buttons, two American Field Service ambulance nameplates, a painted British helmet issued indicating various locations from the Italian Campaign, a helmet cover used to avoid reflections from the moonlight, two German belt buckles, and insignia and badges of British Eighth Army units. The journal was typed and bound in 1987 by Eugene Hammond from the original pocket-sized journal and various notebooks he carried with him during the war, with the addition of wartime letters and other documents. Some original documents, letters, memorabilia, and ephemera used for Appendix A of his printed journal exist in loose form in a separate folder in the collection.
