Flag raising in Zahleh, Lebanon

April 1942

This photograph was taken when Arthur Howe, Jr. and others  raised the first American  Flag over the tents of the Americans in the forces of the Middle East. The flag raising was done under the auspices of General Freyberg  (who was awarded the following British military decorations: Victoria Cross, Distinguished Service Order, Military Cross.). General Freyberg served in the NZ MEF (New Zealand Middle East Forces) .
