Title:
Bird hunting trip in Syria (Jack Hill-Skinner on Pasha Ariens's horse near Damascus, Syria)
Date:
April 1942
Description:
In April 1942, Arthur Howe, Jr. and others rescued a local child who was injured by a military vehicle and took her to a Syrian doctor. The child's parents, as a sign of gratitude, invited Howe, the Syrian docto,r and Jack Hill-Skinner (a Sergeant Major from the New Zealand Expeditionary Force) to go on a bird hunting trip on the mountains above Zahleh. Although the date indicated on the verso of the photograph is March 1942,  Howe's letters document that the bird hunting trip happened in April 1942, the day before Howe went to Palestine.
