Left to right: Two carriers, Sergeant Major Jack Hill-Skinner (from the New Zealand Expeditionary Force), Pasha Ariens, Reg Ryan, Mike. In April 1942, Arthur Howe, Jr. and others rescued a local child who was injured by a military vehicle and took her to a Syrian doctor. The child's parents, as a sign of gratitude, invited Arthur Howe, Jr., the Syrian doctor and Jack Hill Skinner (a fellow from New Zealand) to go on a bird hunting trip on the mountains above Zahleh. The day after the bird hunting trip, Arthur Howe, Jr. went to Palestine.
