Includes Reg Ryan (left) and Sergeant Major Jack Hill-Skinner (right, of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force). In April 1942, Arthur Howe, Jr. and others rescued a local child who was injured by a military vehicle and took her to a Syrian doctor. The child's parents, as a sign of gratitude, invited Howe, the Syrian doctor, and Skinner to go on a bird hunting trip on the mountains above Zahleh. The day after the bird hunting trip, Arthur Howe, Jr. went to Palestine.
