Description:
The photograph was taken in front of the President's House at the American University of Beirut, where Arthur Howe, Jr. spent 10 days recuperating after a hospitalization for dysentary. Bayard Dodge was president of the university. Howe spent four days on leave at the Dodge house sometime toward the end of April and the beginning of May 1942, according to a letter he wrote to Peggy Burke. The Dodges were longime family friends of the Howe's. Bayard Dodge's mother had been a major contributor to the Hampton Institute, which was founded by Howe's grandfather. Mrs. Dodge also funded all secondary school and college costs for Howe's mother.
